49th Mount Washington Road Race
by Michael Pelletier
Saturday, June 20, 2009
PINKHAM NOTCH, NH - Last weekend, five Striders competed in the Mount Washington Road Race, a
7-mile torturous run up the highest Mountain in the East.
Layce Alves for several years has split her time between the NS
Striders and Team Gloucester and is a regular on the Team Gloucester Women's
Open Team for Mount Washington. Vicky Yee and Lee Benton were
recruited by Team Gloucester for their Women's Teams for Mount Washington and
were loaned to Team Gloucester for "future considerations." Judging by their
outstanding performances, the future considerations we receive should be quite
lucrative.
In the team competition, running for Team Gloucester, Layce Alves and
Vicky Yee were one and two on the 12th place Women's Open Team. (12/17
teams). Vicky and Lee Benton were one, two respectively on the
Team Gloucester Women's Masters team which finished 10th of 12 teams. Mary
Stevens was the designated driver, bringing Vicky and Lee
safely down the Mountain (The drive down is scarier than the run up) and then
driving them home.
In the Women's rankings, Layce Alves was 17th Woman Overall; Vicky
Yee was 101st Woman Overall; Lee Benton was 157th Woman Overall. Two
Hundred and Fifty-seven women finished the race to the top of Mount Washington.
Dave Jefska and Steve Weitzler, both experienced mountain
climbers and veterans of the Mount Washington Race, also ran up Mount
Washington, competing for the North Shore Striders.
Former Strider Gus Saulnier, now 73 years old and patched together
with steel rods in his back after a car accident some years ago, also competed,
finishing in 2:43:39
